Herman played on four pennant-winning teams as a member of the Chicago Cubs and Brooklyn Dodgers, posted a lifetime .304 average, and led the National League in both fielding and assists three times, double plays four times, and games played and putouts seven times. He was one of the game's most intelligent players. Casey Stengel characterized him as ""one of the two or three smartest players ever to come into the National League."" Yankee pitcher Carl Hubbell said, ""His first two years in the league he couldn't get a hit off me. So he set out methodically to figure me out. From 1933 on I couldn't get him out.""
